The Tony-winning musical The Book of Mormon will run for 12 weeks at Los Angeles' Pantages Theatre in fall 2012 as part of the show's forthcoming national tour. Performances begin September 5, with the limited engagement concluding on November 25. The national tour is set to kick off on August 14 at Denver's Ellie Caulkins Opera House. No casting has been announced at this time.
“The question people most ask me about the show—aside from ‘Can you get me tickets?’—is ‘When’s it coming to LA?,’” co-composer Robert Lopez said in a statement. “It’s great to finally have a good answer to one question, if not the other.” Co-composers and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone also commented, “We moved to Los Angeles 20 years ago to try and make it as filmmakers. The last thing we expected is that one day we would be bringing our Broadway musical here. It’s crazy and great.”
Featuring a book and score by Parker, Stone and Lopez, The Book of Mormon follows two mismatched teenage missionaries as they set out to spread the Mormon religion in Uganda. Faced by the country's poverty and AIDS epidemic, the duo discovers their mission may not be as easy as they planned. The show opened on Broadway on March 24, 2011, at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre and earned nine Tony Awards including Best Musical.
In addition to the national tour, The Book of Mormon is set to launch a Chicago production in December 2012 at the Bank of America Theatre.
